Ban the ice cream truck – my son is having a meltdown

That iconic sound in the distance – the tune of the ice cream truck.  How exciting that sound was as a kid.  It meant we just may get one of those delicious ice cream treats.  You know the ones that for some reason taste so much better when they come from a truck than from the house freezer.

Sometimes we were treated (and oh so happy we were) and sometimes a little disappointed (especially when it seemed the whole block was licking an ice cream bar except us).

But guess what – we got over it.

A community in New York is asking to ban the ice cream truck.  Why?  Because their kids tantrums are too much to handle.

I guess this means we should hide the ice cream in all stores and cover up store fronts that sell ice cream.   Should probably shut down any toy stores and I may as well ask that they ban dogs on streets since my daughter wants one so bad.  Really?

What happened to parenting??? I could understand if it was a safety issue of kids running out in the street but tantrums?? We have a saying at our preschool, “You get what you get and you don’t throw a fit.” It works really well!!

Oh, just not smart, for so many reasons.

When will parents realize they need to stop putting responsibility every whre else.

These are parents that DON’T want the unpleasantness of dealing with it.

Yeah, dealing with it: it’s not fun, it takes energy and focus and consistency.

They don’t want to parent anymore. They just want quiet kids without interruptions so they can do whatever they do: which is NOT parenting.

Are parents really that afraid to say no to their kids that a tantrum will be too much to have to deal with?? Excuse me, but parents today have really checked out of being parents. Seems supernanny needs to teach them how to create and enforce rules and the parents need to step up and take charge! Incredible. I hadn’t heard of this one before, great conversation topic!

I have to admit, not hearing the ice cream truck is one of those bitter sweet moments of parenting a kid with hearing loss. Julia keeps right on splashing when the truck drives by the community pool in the summer time.

We have had the truck drive up through our neighborhood on a few occasions. I told her we can’t buy any because we don’t want him to come back. My cheapness is better than any ban that could be organized!
